Potluck Hit! These Vegetarian Meatballs Are The Bomb!

Ingredients:
1 egg {OR 15 mL (1 Tbsp) ground flax seeds and 45 mL (3 Tbsp) water}
Oil for frying
1 onion, diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 mL (½ tsp) ground cumin
Pinch red pepper flakes
2 mL (½ tsp) dried oregano
Salt to taste
Juice of 1 lime
250 mL (1 cup) walnut pieces
175 mL (¾ cup) rolled oats
1 – 540 mL (19 ounce) can white beans, drained
Handful chopped cilantro
15 mL (1 Tbsp) tamari or soy sauce
Sauce:
Oil for frying
1 onion, diced
1 banana pepper, diced
1-2 garlic cloves, minced
A few glugs of white wine
1 – 796 mL (28 ounce) tomato pureé
Handful torn or chopped basil leaves
Preheat oven to 200ºC (400º F).
If not using an egg mix the flax seeds and water together and set aside.
Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add the onion and cook, stirring often, until just softened.
Add the garlic, cumin, red pepper flakes, oregano, and salt and continue cooking until fragrant.
Set aside and let just cool.
In a food processor pulse the walnuts and oats until very finely chopped, like a course meal.
Move the walnuts and oats into a mixing bowl.
In the food processor pulse the beans until finely chopped, but not pureed.
Scrape the beans into the bowl with the oats along with the cooked onion and spice mixture, egg (flax seed gel), cilantro, lime juice and soy sauce.
Mix until well combined.
Scoop; roll into balls, and place on a baking sheet.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until meatballs are firmed and bottoms are lightly browned.
Sauce:
In the same pan that you used for the meatballs, sauté the onion, pepper, and garlic until translucent.
Glug in the wine and reduce by ⅔, then stir in the tomato purée.
Stir together over medium heat and then add in the basil.
Cook 5-10 minutes.
Combine the bean balls with the sauce and serve.

"Add some cilantro – because I like cilantro"
Probably to offset the walnut.
I wonder how these would work in a sandwich.
For me texture more important than flavor.
I don't think they're technically croquettes but how about "bean and walnut croquettes"?
Personally, I'd give them a name that describes what they ARE not what they aren't. Something called "meatless balls" will always be a disappointment because they aren't meat.
On the other hand, I'd be perfectly happy with "bean and walnut croquettes". They sound interesting in their own right.
They are dumplings, as are meatballs.
You could substitute egg with aquafava and make it vegan.
Meatlessball
Tried this with chickpeas since that’s what I had and added a dash of liquid smoke. Came out somewhere between a falafel and a meatball. Love it!

Can you use other nuts? Not a walnut fan. Love pecans, almonds and cashews.
Hours late, I chime in with the note that people stumble over fish balls in a similar way and often say 'fish meatballs', so 'vegetable meatballs' is probably legit.
Also, 'nut meat' is a term; meat at one point was used broadly as 'hearty', from what I've gathered.
Beanballs sounds perfect!
Garbanzo beans would give better texture along with finely chopped mushroom. Grated carrots.
Whenever I make my own version of a veggie beany ball concoction like that, I refer to them as meatless balls. 😂 I like to add mashed beetroot into mine, so that they get a nice pinky color, and I enjoy the earthy flavor that they impart. 🙂 I usually add some sort of vegetarian bullion and nutritional yeast and mushroom seasoning too, to make them extra savory. 😁 I like the more mustardy BBQ sauce/grape jelly-ish sauce for my meatless balls, but I think that's just because it was popular at the church potlucks I attended as a child. 😅 I love that sweet/tangy/smoky flavor combo! If you served them with a sweet sauce, you could call them sweetish meatish balls. 😂

Eh why not just call them beanballs. Let's normalise it, it's no weirder than a meatball being made of meat.
Would be great to see a recipe on here every once in a while that was dedicated gluten free!
Thanks for the recipe! Been a vegetarian for over 30 years and though I have a homemade recipe for steak, never tried meatballs. Now I will try this. My understanding is a vegetarian will eat eggs, cheese, and milk, but a vegan does not. Or so that is how I look at it.

Coconut aminos often are gluten free and tastes 80% like soy sauce.
I’m not vegetarian but I love vegetables. I also follow Spain on a fork and I find Albert’s recipes really good. I tend to use beans instead of chickpeas which work just as well. I like that his recipes are simple and cook quickly. I’m going to make these!
So call them oat balls, why do you call them meatballs?
As a vegetarian for 34 years, I like to refer to them veatballs. It's an nod to what is universally known as a "meatball," but the ve indicates vegetarian or veggie or vegetable.

Please oh please tell me I can make as much without the Cilantro! Because of my DNA Cilantro tastes exactly like the horrifying Dishwater that splashes up when you're nearly done washing the dishes and you drop a large metal serving spoon into the water while your mouth is slightly open and that horrible Dishwater goes into your mouth. I am not kidding: Cilantro tastes exactly the same to me.
Its been a while since you a vegetarian/ vegan/ plant based dishes! I am plant based for health reasons, have been for years, but I still watch all your videos because I love learning from Glen’s cooking skills. Very happy to see more stuff I can and really want to eat haha. I found this channel from the vegan stock video.
