Whiting cookbooks should require a team of recipe testers and a qualified editor. A poorly written cookbook is the first to get liberated from the library.
I like Jill's show and I have this cookbook. Her manner of cooking is very calming and she's very invested in the WFPB lifestyle, for example, you won't see any oil in her recipes, always dates instead of sugar, etc. But it's true that her recipes aren't that great, many things I have made have been mushy and tasteless despite enormous amounts of nuts. We never got your family ratings for the bread!
I've tried several of Jill's recipes and they've been pretty good for the most part. Since I'm not gluten free, I've not tried her pie or pizza crusts as they don't appeal. I do think though that you could have checked her video of the recipe you were making and had some of your questions answered. I'm not excusing the errors, just saying that's probably what I would have done and have done when I've been making her recipes. I understand you are reviewing the "book," but that may not be a true representation of the recipe as it does apparently contain so many errors.
Is your cookbook only (Family Favorites eBook)? I'm asking because when I went to your link that's all I saw. And I also wanted to ask, of the vegan recipes in your book do you share any of them on here so I can try them and see if I can make them? Thank you for any help or info.!
Gosh. I was going to buy this book. Thanks for reviewing. If you had issues, I'd be totally out on the cold.
I completely understand your cookbook frustrations! Years ago (like 30+ 😬 years) I enjoyed reading Gourmet magazine. One thing I really liked was that they had a very specific and consistent format for their recipes. Now I find myself looking for that and so many published recipes are badly written and/or confusing. If you’re an experienced cook you can figure it out … but you shouldn’t have to.
Love the way your cookbook has the ingredients and instruction organized❤ Unfortunately, several of Jill's online recipes have errors and typos, but we do like her Zucchini Breakfast Cookies. Lawrence takes them with him when he travels.
With any gluten free crust, whether it be almond, oat, cauliflower or other gluten free flour pizza crust, after blending you need to cook it so that it hardens so the sauce doesn't sog up the crust and then warm up the toppings… It's pretty standard with gluten free cooking. I wish she had specified it.
One of my dogs does the whining with the good toys or treats. She wanders around trying to figure out where to hide them. Then we find a stash of chewy bones under the cushion of her dog bed in pristine condition.
I'm wondering if they used ChatGPT to create the cookbook and they didn't hire an editor or testers. This was disappointing. 🙁
I wonder if the crust would turn out better if it was baked before the toppings were added and then bake again with the toppings
Thanks for the honest reviews of your videos. My kids usually would have the same reactions as yours in trying recipes! lol I can't have too many fats in my diet either, I try to stay away from coconut milk and use it sparingly….since going PBWF, I am always looking for good recipes and books! Purchased your family cookbook and looking forward to try that.
Love your videos. Sorry, how would I be able to obtain a hard copy of your recipe book? I’m not fond of ebooks
I have this cookbook and absolutely love it!
Also many of her recipes from this book are on her website
Jill's desserts are not very sweet and sometimes her other recipes aren't very flavorful in my opinion. I do have the Kindle version of this book. I made the Tikka masala tonight. It was okay but I think it needed salt. She's not my favorite for sure.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for the shoutout!
I had Jill’s book and didn’t like it for a lot of the reasons you didn’t. As for the pizza crust, my daughter is GF and we also make pizza crust using almond flour/tapioca starch combo and pre-bake the crust for about 10-15 minutes before adding the pizza sauce and any other toppings, this way the crust will firm up. The gf bread looks good, if you google for German type seed breads you will find many good recipes. Elavegan has an awesome recipe for that.
Quick dinners……..I love curries especially using red curry paste and pasta in the instant pot, works great even with gf pasta. Your cookbook reviews are awesome❤️
Oh crap. I bought this book for a friend as she is new to veganism. Wish this video was out before I did that.
I gave my book away. I was not happy with it.
EPHpie!!!!
