This looks awesome. Do you think it would turn out fine if you substituted the soy flour with vital wheat gluten?
Recipe below; I am sure it would be appreciated if people would give the real recipe a try and the original author credit! “Soyteena” Original Recipe & Author written by; "Simply Heavenly! ~ The Vegetarian Cookbook by Abbot George Burke”. You can find cheap copies still of it now for $4.00 at; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0028612671/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Tons of recipes for Un-meat analogs. I paid $30.79 (2009) for the then hard to obtain cookbook just to get this recipe. You can see the only adjustments were less onions, and soy flour in place of soybeans. I saw the exact same thing happen to the recipe for making your own laundry soap. Just like to give credit due and a chance to see the real recipe. “Soyteena” Original Recipe & Author written by; "Simply Heavenly! ~ The Vegetarian Cookbook by Abbot George Burke” (Makes two 14.5 oz. cans), one cup dried soybeans, two cups water, one cup tomato juice, 1/2 cup peanut butter, 2 teaspoons sea salt, 1/3 cup finely chopped celery (1 medium stalk), 1/4 cup nutritional yeast, 1/2 cup finely chopped onion, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, one cup cornmeal Combine all the ingredients, except the cornmeal, and process them in a blender until smooth. Remove from the blender and mix in the cornmeal well. Pour into oiled Number 2 cans. Cover cans with metal foil and secure them with rubber bands. Steam for 2 hours or longer in a large kettle that is about one-third full of water when the cans are set in it. Keep the water simmering in the kettle with the lid on. When cooled, remove the cans.
I guess chickpea flour can be subed
She did it!
Don't look like texture of spam tho
Looks grainy
But definitely healthier minus all the sodium
Ty for sharing tho
So cool!! Thanks!
It's the method for me! You're my hero, Christina! <3 This method of cooking vegetarian/vegan meat is classic and I used to see it in old vegetarian cookbooks, but never again after that! Now, here it is! 🙂
Yasssss! I am trying to make buddajiggae Korean soup with this.
Actually it looks more like SPAMs Amish cousin Scrapple to me.
that looks like a really weird cake 😅😅
100th comment, and I’ll definitely have to make this sometime.
Thank you !
Looks like that canned bread lol nom 🥴
ah hell no!
you leave our god damn spam alone!
I need to know if anyone has actually tried this recipe! Spam is my favorite meat (probably why I'm a vegan xD) and I would die for some good vegan spam!!
Masa Harina instead of cornmeal would be MUCH less gritty.
Tahini might be a good substitute for peanut butter
This is just like saying how to commit a holy sin stay out of my meat vegans
I have two questions. The first one is if you want it to be really pink like spam, do you think adding a couple of beers could work? The other one is if you think almond butter could work in place of peanut butter since almond butter has less if an in your face taste?
I tried this. It was not very good– maybe I didn't make it correctly ?
Maybe you could use cashew cream instead of peanut butter.
Looks yummy…but can I use a different flour 🤔😁♥️
I love spam, so I'm going to really want to make this. Thx for giving the recipe to us.
Why go to all the trouble of using cans to cook this, instead of just cooking in a bread loaf pan? slices would be rectangular already. Just curious. I am looking for a vegetarian spam substitute and this sounds interesting.
I see two major probes with this recipe… first, add oil. Spam=fat, empty calories. Second, no cornmeal, use corn masa, not cornmeal. It should yield a less grainy end game spam.im trying this tmw. Also gonna try it with red lentil powder instead of soy. I've made veg dogs with them they rock!
Kinda looks like Liverwurst
You should try extra fine corn masa (maseca) it s a Mexican staple I found it tastes like potted meat when you add bouillon!
I have no idea what a spam is other than junk mail lol. However this sounds and look intriguing hardly can wait to try!!!! 🤤
Can you still taste the peanut butter?
Thank You sooo much dearest sweetie 💐🙏🏼
Stay Blissful Eternally 😇🕉💖
This would be perfect for a vegan Spam musabi. BTW I loved the background music.
SPAM?! AHH! I'm part Native Hawaiian and my husband is Cantonese. Your channel is my new cook book. Thank you!
I love peanut Butter but C'mon on! I don't like Spam that tastes a little bit like Peanut Butter. Sorry, Don't mean to offend you, but I'm just Not a fan of this recipe.. You could replace the corn meal with Reconstituted TVP which has been pureed to a semi dry but smooth crumbly paste. The peanut butter can be replaced with refined Coconut oil too. IT gets rid of the peanut butter flavor and makes the spam taste better. It has a better texture that way too. I never quite understood the people who want to slather vegan Ribs with Peanut butter before baking them, or the people who use one nut or seed butter or another in their vegan meats. It really does end up taking away from the flavor of the finished recipe.
you just gave me an idea peanut a cheese with the nutritional yeast and peanut butter just a thought have a little bit of a cheesy peanutty taste wonder if you can make a loaf like that of course vegan
uck why..who eats spam to begin with greasy salt mystery meat thing.Passing on this!
that's very interesting
Question: would it be easier to remove from the can if the "Spam" was still heated and not cooled down so much (maybe 15 to 20 min after pulling out of the water bath? As the can is cooling, pop a hole or remove the back cover like you did and in theory the "Spam" should be able to slide out.
Yess I love spam
Perhaps you may want to try corn flour in place of corn meal if it is gritty.
This sounds great! After you fried it then it really looked like Spam …perhaps a bit less gelatinous? Anyhow thanks for doing this!!!
You sure there’s supposed to be that much water in the recipe? Because I followed your recipe exactly and it came out shit. Waste of my money, food, and time. So fucking disappointed.
If you can find it, Fry's Polony is vegan and is very similar to Spam.
